Drive by shooting with airgun

Last night (Friday 12 June) our window was hit by an airgun pellet, apparently shot from a passing vehicle. Although the outer pane was penetrated, the inner pane remained intact. But what could have happened had we not got double glazing? What kind of town are we living in? I hope all the residents of Smallthorne are aware of what is happening.

Join the Garden Party at Ford Green Hall

Ford Green Hall will be hosting its annual Garden Party on Sunday 14 June between 1pm and 4pm.

The outside event is free to all visitors, and is being held within the period garden of the 17th century, timber framed hall. All visitors are invited to bring a picnic and spend the (hopefully) warm and sunny afternoon enjoying the atmosphere of an English summer garden party. Visitors will also be able to treat themselves to cakes, ice cream and strawberries and cream.

The annual free family event promises something for all visitors including craft activities and a fun trail for the children, lively music from the Staffordshire Accordion Band and the Giant Talking Topiary Bushes nestled in gigantic terracotta pots. Passers by will be surprised and delighted by mischievous garden fairies that live within them. However, beware as they can be over-zealous with their watering cans!

Museum Manager Malgosia Phillips said: “Our annual Summer Garden Party has been growing in popularity each year. It’s a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon, relaxing within the grounds of such a beautiful and atmospheric garden. I love the music played by the Staffordshire Accordion Band. This year I am also looking forward to meeting the Giant Topiary Bushes, which promises to be a lot of fun”.

The Summer Garden party is being held at Ford Green Hall, in Ford Green Road, Smallthorne, Stoke-on-Trent. For more information call 01782 233195 or email ford.green.hall@stoke.gov.uk.

The hall is open Sunday to Thursday between 1pm and 5pm and costs £2.50 for adults, £1.50 for concessions and £5.95 for a family ticket. Under 5s and wheelchair users are free.

Swans at risk

I recently caught a youth throwing stones at the swans nesting in the Whitfield Valley. I hope his parents are proud of him.
